Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides are injectable skin-repair treatments made from purified DNA fragments, also known as polynucleotide chains. In aesthetic treatments, they are used to support the skin’s natural repair activity and improve skin quality gradually over time.

Unlike dermal fillers, polynucleotides do not add volume or reshape the face. They work more like a skin-conditioning treatment, helping to support hydration, elasticity, firmness and tissue resilience from within the skin.

They may be suitable for skin that looks tired, thin, crepey, dehydrated, fragile or less firm. They are often used around the under-eyes, where the skin is delicate, as well as on the face, neck and other suitable areas.

The aim is gradual improvement in skin quality, not an instant cosmetic change.

What the treatment involves

Your appointment begins with a consultation and skin assessment to review your concerns, treatment area, medical history, suitability and expectations.

The treatment area is cleansed and prepared. Polynucleotides are then placed into the skin using a series of small superficial injections across the selected treatment area.

Small bumps, redness, tenderness or swelling may be visible immediately after treatment. This is expected and usually settles as the product disperses.

After treatment, the skin is checked and full aftercare advice is provided.

Treatment approach

Polynucleotides are selected when the main goal is gradual improvement in skin quality, hydration, firmness and resilience rather than volume or facial reshaping.

They may be suitable for clients with tired, crepey, delicate, dehydrated or ageing skin, especially where the skin needs progressive improvement rather than an instant cosmetic change.

A course is usually recommended because results develop gradually. Polynucleotides are not a one-treatment miracle. The skin response builds over time.

Under-eye polynucleotides may be considered for selected clients with crepey texture, fine lines, thin-looking skin or poor skin quality around the eyes. They are not suitable for every under-eye concern. Puffiness, large eye bags, deep hollows, fluid retention or pigmentation-related dark circles may require a different approach.

The aim is to support healthier-looking, stronger and more resilient skin over time.

Polynucleotide results develop gradually. The skin may start to look more hydrated, smoother, firmer and healthier over time, but improvement is progressive rather than instant.

Most clients need a course of treatments for best results, especially when treating under-eye skin quality, fine lines, crepey texture or loss of elasticity.

Polynucleotides do not replace dermal filler, surgery or medical dermatology treatment. They will not remove deep eye bags, lift heavy skin or erase deep wrinkles. Their role is to improve skin quality, resilience and tissue condition.

Results vary depending on the product used, treatment area, skin condition, lifestyle, homecare and individual response.

Downtime

Temporary redness, swelling, small bumps, tenderness, injection marks or bruising may occur after treatment.

Under-eye treatments can carry a higher risk of temporary swelling because the area is delicate and more prone to fluid retention.

Small bumps can be visible immediately after treatment and usually settle as the product disperses. Bruising is possible with any injectable treatment.

After treatment, you will usually need to avoid makeup, heat treatments, intense exercise, alcohol, exfoliating acids, retinoids and direct sun exposure for the advised period.

Daily SPF is important after the initial healing period, especially when maintaining skin quality and protecting against pigmentation and premature ageing.
